The Neuse River Trail is a 27.5-mile paved greenway that winds along the Neuse River, offering a peaceful escape for walkers, runners, cyclists, and nature lovers. Stretching from Falls Lake Dam to the Wake/Johnston County line, this trail is part of North Carolina’s Mountains-to-Sea Trail network.
Along the way, you'll experience diverse landscapes, including wetlands, hardwood forests, and open fields. The trail features scenic boardwalks, suspension bridges, and interpretive signs that highlight the area's natural and cultural history.
The Neuse River, one of the oldest rivers in the United States, was named after the Neusiok people, a Native American tribe that once lived along its banks. In 1584, English explorers Arthur Barlowe and Phillip Amadas documented their encounters with the Neusiok, referring to the area as "Neusiok" and the river as "Neuse."
The trail itself was completed in 2014 as part of Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway system, connecting communities and providing access to the river’s natural beauty.
